The science and practice of flood disaster management in urbanizing Monsoon Asia
International Workshop, 4-5 April 2007, Chiang Mai , Thailand
The Mekong Programme on Water Environment and Resilience is organizing a workshop that will discuss current understanding of changes to flood regimes in urbanizing regions, their consequences for vulnerability of different social groups and what actions should be taken now to reduce risks of flood disasters in Monsoon Asia. It will bring together a group of around 30 flood managers and researchers within the region to define a prioritized agenda for how science and practice could most fruitfully interact in the next five years to reduce vulnerabilities to floods in urbanizing regions of Monsoon Asia. Natural and Human-Induced Environmental Hazards
and Disasters
Although we can’t actually stop hurricanes, tsunamis or other
extremes of nature, we should be able to use science to prevent
these events from becoming economic and human catastrophes. This
was the theme of ICSU’s first conference on environmental
hazards and disasters, which was held on the 19 September in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia. “It’s time to change the mindset that
natural disasters are inevitable,” says Gordon McBean, Chair
of the ICSU Scoping Group on Environmental Hazards and Disasters.
UNESCO, through its Regional office for Science in Jakarta and the
Academy of Sciences of Malaysia co-sponsored the conference.
